August Visualisation: Milton Keynes – through the years

Milton Keynes is a city located in the south of England. With an economic growth of 2.1% year-on-year, Milton Keynes has been noted as one of the fastest growing cities in the UK. Hence being chosen to be the centre of this month’s visualisation blog.

This month, we looked at the everchanging road network. To do that, we got ITN road network data from 2011 to 2018 and 2019 OS Highways data for the whole of the UK, then we selected using Highways Analyst, TRACC and QGIS to focus on the area of Milton Keynes. This data allowed us to get an image per year and finally a visualization on how Milton Keynes road network has increased in size.

These individual images were then imported into a video editor (Adobe Premier) and we added a fade in between. This allows the images to seamlessly grow the road network throughout the years.

The video showhow Milton Keynes has increased over the last eight years. This kind of visualisation is very useful when we want to present areas that has had a notable development.

Between years you can see the significant difference in the road network, highlighting the importance of having the most up-to-date data for accurate results.  For further investigation, it would be useful to also look at a comparison of public transport access over this time, to ensure that these new roads/houses still have great access to local schools, healthcare and shops.
